“Corpse Flower” Brings The Odor Of Rotting Flesh To Orange Coast College

The smell of rotting flesh will soon fill the air of Orange Coast College’s Administrative Building when the Amorphophallus Titanum plant that has been part of the horticultural department of the educational institution since 2006.

Although the “Corpse Flower” is well known for being a beautiful flower display, it is best known for recreating the smell of rotting flesh that can fill the air of any room with a smell so strong the students and staff at Orange Coast College were forced to run fans throughout the day when a different “Corpse Flower” bloomed in 2014.

One of the most impressive aspects of the flowering of the “Corpse Flower” is the magenta petals that surround the spadix central spike that will be seen for between 24 and 48 hours over the course of the first blooming that takes place after ten years of life.

Orange Coast College saw thousands of visitors arrive when “Little John”, the “Corpse Flower” bloomed in 2014 and will be followed by the blooming of “Little Dougie” this year; visitors will be allowed extended visiting hours until 10 p.m. when the flower blooms in the Orange Coast College Administrative Building, which will be open to visitors providing a $3 donation when entering.

Orange Coast College is one of the leading two-year colleges in the nation, ranking 65th in the nation for its successful transfer rate to four-year colleges, particularly to California State University and the University of California.

Over the life of the college, the weekly student operated the newspaper, “The Coast Report” has become one of the most respected in the nation with more than 5,000 copies produced each week for the student body of the institution.

Formed by the two co-founders, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, the Frontera Fund is came about from a $3.75 million settlement resulting from the pair’s unjust incarceration by the Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The Frontera Fund exists to help promote and support various organizations that concentrate on issues regarding migration, civil, and human rights. This includes topics having to do with low wage households and the issues that minorities face in the country today, particularly immigrants hailing from Mexico.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was the sheriff working the case against the two journalist founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media, has since been kicked out of the force due to the abuse of his title. A recent article that surfaced on the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund website details the feats of Bazta Arpaio, who was one of the main grassroot coalitions responsible for getting Joe Arpaio off the force.

In recent news on the Arpaio Archives forefront, Bazta Arpaio has been awarded the Maclovio Barraza Award for leadership. The award has been given to the group July 10th at the esteemed 2017 National Council for La Raza (NCLR) Conference.

The chair of the NCLR Board of Directors, Renata Soto, has much to say on the positive impact that the Bazta Arpaio coalition has had on its community. She went on to explain that they were the ones who put the most pressure on Joe Arpaio, when he was still part of the police force in Maricopa County.

They were the ones who spoke the loudest about their demands that he either change his crooked practices or step down from his position as sheriff and leave the force.

Bazta Arpaio did not back down when Arpaio continued to try and instill fear in those who opposed him and it was they who took to the streets to protest the ex-sheriff the strongest.

It’s true that it was Bazta Arpaio who led the rallies, walk-outs, ran a voting campaign in Maricopa County, and held a strong social media presence on the matter throughout it all. Their name, Bazta Arpaio, which translates as a combination of “enough” with the AZ shortening of Arizona, really kept their eyes on the prize and the name reflected their intention until the goal was achieved.

The Bazta Arpaio was primarily led by mothers who had been previously deported, as well as those who were themselves undocumented and by a number of minorities in the community who shared a sense of kinship for the cause.

The exec. director of the Center for Neighborhood Leadership, Viridiana Hernandez, thanked all those who were involved in the movement in her community, including hard workers and families who had been affected by Arpaio’s actions, either directly or indirectly. Larkin and Lacey’s Support for the First Amendment is Unwavering, Still

Village Voice Media executives, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, were wrongfully arrested in 2007 by former Sheriff Joe Arpaio in an attack on their free speech. They were forcefully removed from their homes, whisked away in unmarked vehicles, and locked in separate jails, both run by Joe Arpaio. Their paper, Phoenix New Times, had been reporting Arpaio’s wrongdoings since his election in 1992, and he retaliated. They were released in less than twenty-four hours and the charges were dropped. Mr. Larkin and Mr. Lacey were awarded a $3.7 million settlement from Maricopa County in 2013, after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found their arrest to be unlawful.

Mr. Lacey and Mr. Larkin weren’t done using their voices and platforms, however, and used this money to found the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, so that they may actively support the Hispanic and Latino population of the greater Phoenix area and beyond. The fund helps non-profit groups in the area defend the rights of Hispanics and Latinos, who are often discriminated against by law enforcement. They have also returned to the world of publishing, with the Front Page Confidential, an online publication that aims to support the First Amendment and bring light to injustices surrounding it.

After calling out the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio and his entire police force for excessively harassing Hispanic and Latino-American drivers in a Phoenix News Times article, journalists Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey became aggressively targeted. The sheriff had sent out his ‘Selective Enforcement Unit’ to arrest Larkin and Lacey while they were inside their Phoenix, AZ, homes. They ordered them into scary unmarked SUVs with license plates from Mexico and locked them inside two separate county jails. This bizarre story seemed right out of a television show, but this is how the notorious sheriff operates. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey have sued Joe Arpaio and after years of a back and forth legal battle, Maricopa County offered to pay them a whopping $3.75 million to settle.

Larkin and Lacey formed the Frontera Fund with some of the settlement money. The Frontera Fund provides grants to charities and organizations that support migrant and Latino rights. The journalist are strong advocates of human, civil and migrant rights and deeply want to help Latino-American citizens live a prosperous life without being targeted and harassed by Arizona’s police force.
