End Citizens United makes their goal easy to understand by employing their name: they want to reverse the Supreme Court decision of Citizens United v. FEC. When the Supreme Court decided in favor of Citizens United, instead of upholding the rules of the FEC, it opened doors for corporations and individuals to unanimously back a politician – often with unlimited amounts of cash backing them.
This was a dramatic change to the political process. End Citizens United and many other people believe that this decision unfairly assists the Republican party, who often represents the interests of big corporations.
The controversy began with Hillary: The Movie, which the FEC ruled as a political campaign ad, despite its full feature length. When Citizens United, the organization that created the film, refused to reveal the contributors to the film, the legal process began. This was in 2008.
A federal court originally ruled in favor of the FEC, but once the case got to the Supreme Court, the original decision was reversed.
As the midterm elections edge closer, End Citizens United is running full steam ahead after several successful special elections in 2018. End Citizens United is standing behind several Democrat candidates in the upcoming November election.
Beto O’Rourke, who is campaigning for Ted Cruz’s Texas Senate seat, is one of ECU’s most promising candidates. The removal of Ted Cruz from Congress would be a huge win for ECU because Ted Cruz is known to accept corporate money to run his campaign.
The team at End Citizens United have had their hands full for quite awhile as they focus on the kind of political reformation that could bring power back to the people of the United States.
End Citizens United is a political action committee that was created in direct response to one of the most shocking Supreme Court decisions of all time, the case of Citizens United. Citizens United is a conservative think-tank run by lawyer James Bopp. Bopp has made it his mission to give power to corporations and lobbyists so that they can use their money to simply purchase elections. End Citizens United is a response by the people that plainly says: this will not stand.
We’ve seen End Citizens United become increasingly active in the months since Donald Trump took office. End Citizens United, which is led by PAC President Tiffany Muller, has been focused on harnessing the energy of the anti-Trump movement in order to bring about some attention to the cause at End Citizens United. End Citizens United is focused on backing enough high level legislators that they have a tangible shot at introducing a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision. This mission, of course, can only be accomplished if the people back them and End Citizens United backs the proper people.
Most recently we have seen End Citizens United come out in support of several high level Democratic politicians. Just this past week End Citizens United announced their endorsement of Doug Jones in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Jones, who used to be an attorney, is running during the Alabama Special Election against Republican Roy Moore this December 12th. End Citizens United got behind Doug Jones for a variety of different reasons but largely because he is willing to go to the mat and fight for campaign finance reform.
Tiffany Muller typically makes a statement when End Citizens United decides to endorse a politician and this case wasn’t any different. Muller said, “Roy Moore’s radical agenda has no place in the US Senate, plain and simple.” Muller went on to lambast Moore for his various bigoted, racist, and corrupt comments. Doug Jones wasn’t one to let Moore off of the hook either. Jones released a statement regarding Moore that called him, “An extremist with a racist, bigoted agenda, who will defend a corrupt rigged system in Washington.”
End Citizens United went on to fully get behind Doug Jones and his campaign thanks to Jones’ own deep history of doing the right thing. As an attorney Jones helped to put KKK members behind bars for their role in bombing a Baptist Church which killed four little girls. End Citizens United also focused on Jones’ willingness to fight against the Citizens United decision.
